The year is drawing to a close, and as we slowly switch into Christmas mode (cookies? Already eaten. Punch? Already warmed up), we at ORISA look back on a diverse and exciting 2024. It was a year that not only brought us together as a team, but also gave us many special moments. From major anniversaries to top sporting achievements — we take you on a short journey through our ORISA year!

30 Years of ORISA — A Reason to Celebrate! 🎉

Imagine it’s 1994: Internet? Still uncharted territory. Smartphones? Science fiction. CPQ software? A bold dream. But that’s exactly the year ORISA was founded — and 30 years later, we’re still here, bigger and more innovative than ever! Our anniversary on September 26 was the highlight of the year for us: a celebration that brought together our employees, customers, and partners. Together, we toasted our journey and reminded ourselves of how far we have come.

Next-Level Innovation: CPQ, SAP and a Touch of a Magic

2024 was also a year full of technical milestones for us! The KMAT coupling of our CREALIS® CPQ solution with SAP S/4HANA via VCP is particularly noteworthy. This enables companies to speed up sales processes and make their product configurations even more efficient — a real game changer for our customers.

Our CREALIS® test tool also generated a lot of enthusiasm: With its ability to automate tests for complex rule sets, we ensure stability and quality even before problems arise. This is an important step in helping our customers boost efficiency.

We also shared our knowledge in webinars and at the CPQ Day in Jena, where exciting discussions on CPQ trends and SAP integrations were on the agenda. Next year, we would also like to give you an exclusive insight into the world of product configuration and look forward to welcoming you to our customer iTD (medical technology industry) at CPQ Day 2025 in Pfarrkirchen.

Strong together: health, team spirit and responsibility

But success needs more than technology — it requires healthy and engaged people. The fact that ORISA focuses on people was demonstrated in many ways in 2024: for example, our Health Month in March provided valuable impetus for physical and mental well-being in the workplace and this commitment was crowned with the “Thuringian Seal for Healthy Work” in gold.
Speaking of fitness: we once again gave our all at the 13th Jena company run — not only on the course, but also for a good cause. And because we also love slightly more unusual challenges, we took part in this year’s dragon boat sprint. Spoiler: We may not have had fast fins, but we had a lot of fun!

But we were not only active in sports: as the founder of the Jena Prize for Civil Courage, we set an important example for social commitment this year. Because in these challenging times, it is all the more important to promote civil courage and solidarity.
The year was rounded off with the Long Night of Science, where we brought science and technology to life for everyone. Between microscopes, technical experiments and visions of the future, we showed that even complex topics such as product configuration can be accessible and exciting — and discovered our “superpowers” in the process.

We say THANK YOU!

At the end of the year, we took part in a project close to our hearts and put up a “wish tree” decorated with children’s wishes that colleagues could “pick” to make Christmas a little brighter for children in the region. A big thank you to all ORISA employees who took part! Together with the Jena Community Foundation, we were able to help make these wishes come true. ORISA not only paid the fixed contribution per gift, but also supported the campaign with an additional donation — so that as many children’s eyes as possible can light up.

30 Years at ORISA: Of Floppy Disks, Zigzag Lines and the Secret of a long Career

To mark the 30th anniversary of Ralf Hohmann, one of our longest-serving and most experienced project managers at ORISA, we took the opportunity to talk to him about his impressive 30-year career. He shared not only professional highlights, but also charming misadventures and unique moments from three decades. His memories provide an insight into a varied career as a programmer and project manager — and show how much humor, passion, and innovative spirit have been at the heart of Ralf’s work.

On September 1, 1994, Ralf started his first working day at the former company focal — now ORISA, which was still based at Krautgasse 2 at the time — with employee ID number 9 after completing his mathematics degree.

It was already clear at his job interview that Ralf and the company were a good match. “I’ve always found cross-border things interesting,” he says with a laugh. And this curiosity has never left him in the last few decades — nor has the joy of solving problems, even if it hasn’t always been without incident.

From total breakdown to math miracle: Ralf’s early adventures in IT

In his early years at ORISA, Ralf provided an unforgettable moment at Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH — and caused some astonished faces among the technologists there. His task was to install an update for the tool management system — at the time still on floppy disk and delivered personally in an appropriately old-school manner. But instead of a simple update, he had mistakenly brought the creation script, which by default starts by deleting previous tables. Within a few seconds, the entire department came to a standstill. “Suddenly there was a total breakdown,” he recalls with a smile today. Fortunately, a backup was available, and Ralf has since learned to double-check before going live.

During a project for a bank, Ralf stumbled across a real curiosity: when he discovered that the original software could divide by zero and actually spit out the value “1”, it was clear that something was wrong. In normal programs, dividing by zero typically results in a crash, not a mathematical miracle. So a division operator had to be programmed to reproduce exactly this error in order to run the banking software correctly. Sometimes in IT, you have to make the impossible possible — even if it doesn’t make mathematical sense.

From an intimate breakfast circle to a summer party in the garden

Even though the company has grown ninefold (write out the number) since Ralf’s early days and the corporate culture has had to adapt accordingly, Ralf likes to talk about the close bond within the team. In the early years, the collegial relationship was close — almost familial. Summer parties were held in his garden — initially started by chance — where, as he recalls with a smile, sometimes forty adults and ten children would jump through the garden.

For him, the close team spirit is still one of the reasons why he has remained loyal to the company for so many years. “Even though we now have almost 70 employees, you can still feel this team spirit. And that’s what makes the difference for me.”

Siemens: the most important relationship and the greatest success

Ralf’s career at ORISA is closely linked to the customer Siemens Switzerland. He started working on the project back in 2006, and the first online version of the HIT program went live in 2008.
A promotional “how-to” video was even produced for the offline version, in which the tool took center stage. “That was a great moment,” he recalls proudly. Ralf has now implemented almost 20 projects with Siemens and maintains a close relationship with this customer. “The biggest compliment is when the customer keeps coming back to you. It shows that there is mutual appreciation and trust.”

Technological change: from floppy disks to cloud solutions

Technology has also changed massively over the last 30 years. “We used to have one computer that we all had to share in order to access the internet,” Ralf recalls with a laugh.
Today, of course, software development is very different: “A lot of things have become more convenient, but some things, such as security requirements, also make the work more complex.” He compares the software industry to the fashion world — trends come and go, but at the core, many things remain the same.

The secret of his motivation: enjoying his job

And what keeps Ralf motivated after 30 years? “I simply enjoy it,” he says simply. Working with customers, the challenge of solving their problems, and, of course, his team — that’s what drives him. “I get on with some colleagues like an old married couple. We can communicate in half sentences and are constantly learning from each other.” This mix of fun and camaraderie keeps him going.

The varied tasks also mean that working at ORISA is never boring. Supporting projects in a wide range of industries and learning completely new things in the process are still a big plus point of his work for Ralf. “What I like about it is that you pick up a bit of knowledge wherever you go. Now I can even read basic hydraulic circuit diagrams and, thanks to another project in the field of rail vehicle construction, I’ve learned what a zigzag width is,” he says with a wink.

Advice for the next generation

Ralf has clear advice for young colleagues: “Do what you enjoy.” For him, programming has always been more than just a job. “For me, programming is an art. The only limit is logic — and as long as something doesn’t contradict logic, you can program it.” He sees this creative freedom as the greatest strength of his work. In conclusion, Ralf explains that the key to his 30-year career is simple: “Having fun for 30 years. If you do what you love, you don’t even notice how time flies.”

In Ralf, we have a colleague who is not only a walking encyclopaedia of technical solutions, but who also remains an important part of the ORISA family. Whether dividing by 0 or floppy disk glitches — his anecdotes show that in 30 years you not only grow, but also laugh a lot together.

Courageous fellow human being found!

For the second time this year, ORISA donated the “Jena Prize for Civil Courage”. The award ceremony took place on September 27 in Jena’s town hall. As an open-minded company from Thuringia, ORISA is happy to support this prize, which sends out a signal against discrimination and exclusion.

This year, Moritz Henniger was honored for his unprecedented intervention during a school event. In June, Moritz showed civil courage during a violent altercation in the school playground when a fellow pupil attacked and injured another. He calmed the injured man with breathing exercises that he knew from the voluntary fire department. When the injured boy’s father arrived, the situation came to a head again. Moritz acted quickly and constructively, supported the teacher, called for help and calmed down the surrounding pupils. He thus helped to defuse the situation and stood by frightened classmates.

Congratulations to Moritz, who set a sign of compassion and solidarity through his exemplary behavior. After all, mutual respect is the basis for moving forward together, not only in a professional context, but also in society.

Diversity instead of Simplicity

How can we create an open and tolerant working environment in which everyone involved can feel comfortable? How can we strengthen Thuringia as a business location and counteract the shortage of skilled workers? Many Thuringian companies are currently facing these and other challenges.

Last week, ORISA therefore hosted an inspiring workshop on the topic of “Diversity instead of Simplicity”, organized by Bildungswerk der Thüringer Wirtschaft e.V.. Colleagues from a wide range of departments worked together intensively on the importance of diversity in the workplace, intercultural communication, and raising awareness of discrimination. Interactive activities such as lively statistics, the Privilege Walk, exciting quizzes, and inspiring presentations not only expanded our factual knowledge, but also triggered lively discussions and self-reflection.

A big thank you goes to Sara Holzner and Francesco Bindi from the project “listen.understand.act” for the great implementation of this workshop in two versions — on-site and online.
We look forward to integrating the insights gained into our everyday (working) lives.

Three months at ORISA: Intern Malte reports

We welcomed Malte to our ORISA team in April 2024. For three months, he actively supported the areas of HR development and occupational health management. We are delighted to be able to share his experience report on the insights he gained into the world of work. Read here what he has to say about his time with us:

As part of my psychology degree, I completed an internship at ORISA Software GmbH for around three months. Not only did I gain a wide range of experience in the field of occupational health management and health and safety. I also got to know the various facets and generalist activities that are required of occupational psychologists in a medium-sized company. I worked alongside Ms. Rehe as she worked on day-to-day tasks and organized application processes. From taking part in health and safety meetings and planning occupational health and safety measures, I was able to gain many impressions.

I had a lot of freedom during my internship. This related not only to the place of work and working hours, but also to the work tasks. I really appreciated the fact that I was able to take on tasks that I was interested in and where I saw a need. For example, I was able to further develop the skills I had acquired in a training course to become a trainer directly in two workshops at the company. I was given a lot of creative freedom without being left to my own devices.

All in all, the three months at ORISA helped me progress, and I was able to gain valuable experience. In addition, by participating in company events, I immediately had the feeling of being part of the company. Everyone was open and friendly, and I will always remember the pleasant working atmosphere, the collegial cooperation and the positive corporate culture.

Review of the Jobwalk on 08 June 2024

Last Saturday’s Jobwalk was once again a huge success and we are thrilled by the incredible energy and commitment of all participants. We look back on a day full of interesting conversations and lots of fun networking in a relaxed atmosphere in the best summer weather on Jena’s market square.

Another absolute highlight this year was the homemade Weimar Biebereis, which was exclusively available at our ORISA booth.

This time, we received a particularly large number of questions about apprenticeships — luckily, we had our experienced trainer Florian with us, who was able to help all interested visitors with his expertise. A day at the boathouse: our team event full of fun and action

Yesterday we swapped the usual office atmosphere for fresh air at the boathouse in Jena and spent our annual team day there — an event that we will remember for a long time to come.

Tricky games of skill not only challenged us mentally, but also put our team spirit to the test, because tying knots is not so easy when twenty people are holding the same rope. SUP boards were available to try out, on which many of us rediscovered our sense of balance, and those who preferred to get wet as a team were able to train for the upcoming dragon boat race. Under the motto “We’re all in the same boat”, we paddled — more or less — in unison, strengthening not only our muscles but also our sense of community.

But it wasn’t just on the water, there were also numerous challenges to master on land. Whether it was volleyball, table tennis or other team challenges — there was something for everyone and the team spirit was palpable everywhere. Despite the changeable weather, we didn’t let it spoil our spirits. Special thanks go to the dedicated organising team, who put their heart and soul and creativity into making this day an unforgettable and motivating experience. Our team is not only strong at work, but also a great community. 💪

We brought the evening to a festive close at the subsequent family summer party. The tables were laden with the delicacies we had brought with us. We laughed, barbecued, played games and spent the evening in the best of family company.

All in all, our team day was not only proof of how strong we are as an ORISA team, but also a reminder of how important it is to create and enjoy shared experiences outside of everyday working life. A really great day that leaves us wanting more.

Company run 2024 in Jena — movement connects!

ORISA took part in the 13th Jena company run yesterday. Just in time for the opening, not only the weather was at its best, but also all the participating teams. Almost 3,000 participants completed the approx. 5 km course and supported social projects in this way.

It was great to see how many of our colleagues took part, some of them for the first time. Regardless of whether the route was run, jogged or completed at a brisk walking pace — everyone can take part and find their own pace. Whoever crosses the finish line is definitely a winner. The company run in Jena showed us once again that it’s not just the performance that unites us, but the shared exercise and stamina!

As additional motivation, our boss fired up the barbecue afterwards for all those who had registered to take part and provided tasty food from the grill. With prospects like this, we are already looking forward to competing together again at the next company run! 😉

Brave Fellow People are Wanted

The “Jena Prize for Civil Courage” is being awarded for the 23rd time this year and has a long history of recognizing courageous people who have shown civil courage. The aim of this award is to bring civil courage into the public eye, to encourage people to reflect and to rethink their own actions. The central question remains: What does moral courage mean to me?

We are therefore delighted that ORISA is once again supporting the Jena Prize for Civil Courage this year! In the midst of challenging times, we would like to help emphasize the positive in our society by sponsoring this award. ORISA’s leitmotif — “Innovation through configuration” — stands for the idea that progress is not only based on technological developments, but also on the intelligent adaptation of existing resources, ideas and values. Civil courage also often requires adaptation and the willingness to go against existing norms and injustices, even if this can be uncomfortable or challenging.

From our daily work in the team, with customers and partners, we know that mutual respect is the basis for moving forward together. And so we consider it immensely important to strengthen this understanding in society. The Jena Prize for Civil Courage is a sign against discrimination and exclusion and we are pleased to be able to support this signal.
