To mark the 30th anni\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adry of Ralf Hoh\u00admann, one of our lon\u00adgest-ser\u00adving and most expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced pro\u00adject mana\u00adgers at ORISA, we took the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to talk to him about his impres\u00adsi\u00adve 30-year care\u00ader. He shared not only pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal high\u00adlights, but also char\u00adming mis\u00adad\u00adven\u00adtures and uni\u00adque moments from three deca\u00addes. His memo\u00adries pro\u00advi\u00adde an insight into a varied care\u00ader as a pro\u00adgramm\u00ader and pro\u00adject mana\u00adger \u2014 and show how much humor, pas\u00adsi\u00adon, and inno\u00adva\u00adti\u00adve spi\u00adrit have been at the heart of Ralf\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

On Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 1, 1994, Ralf star\u00adted his first working day at the for\u00admer com\u00adpa\u00adny focal \u2014 now ORISA, which was still based at Kraut\u00adgas\u00adse 2 at the time \u2014 with employee ID num\u00adber 9 after com\u00adple\u00adting his mathe\u00adma\u00adtics degree.<\/p>\n<\/div>

It was alre\u00ada\u00addy clear at his job inter\u00adview that Ralf and the com\u00adpa\u00adny were a good match. \u201cI\u2019ve always found cross-bor\u00adder things inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading,\u201d he says with a laugh. And this curio\u00adsi\u00adty has never left him in the last few deca\u00addes \u2014 nor has the joy of sol\u00adving pro\u00adblems, even if it has\u00adn\u2019t always been wit\u00adhout inci\u00addent.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

From total break\u00addown to math mira\u00adcle: Ral\u00adf\u2019s ear\u00adly <\/span>adven\u00adtures in IT<\/h4>\n

In his ear\u00adly years at ORISA, Ralf pro\u00advi\u00added an unfor\u00adgettable moment at Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH \u2014 and cau\u00adsed some asto\u00adnis\u00adhed faces among the tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgists the\u00adre. His task was to install an update for the tool manage\u00adment sys\u00adtem \u2014 at the time still on flop\u00adpy disk and deli\u00adver\u00aded per\u00adso\u00adnal\u00adly in an appro\u00adpria\u00adte\u00adly old-school man\u00adner. But ins\u00adtead of a simp\u00adle update, he had mista\u00adken\u00adly brought the crea\u00adti\u00adon script, which by default starts by dele\u00adting pre\u00advious tables. Within a few seconds, the enti\u00adre depart\u00adment came to a standstill. \u201cSud\u00adden\u00adly the\u00adre was a total break\u00addown,\u201d he recalls with a smi\u00adle today. For\u00adt\u00adu\u00adna\u00adte\u00adly, a back\u00adup was available, and Ralf has sin\u00adce lear\u00adned to dou\u00adble-check befo\u00adre going live.<\/p>\n

During a pro\u00adject for a bank, Ralf stumb\u00adled across a real curio\u00adsi\u00adty: when he dis\u00adco\u00adver\u00aded that the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal soft\u00adware could divi\u00adde by zero and actual\u00adly spit out the value \u201c1\u201d, it was clear that some\u00adthing was wrong. In nor\u00admal pro\u00adgrams, divi\u00adding by zero typi\u00adcal\u00adly results in a crash, not a mathe\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcal mira\u00adcle. So a divi\u00adsi\u00adon ope\u00adra\u00adtor had to be pro\u00adgrammed to repro\u00addu\u00adce exact\u00adly this error in order to run the ban\u00adking soft\u00adware cor\u00adrect\u00adly. Some\u00adti\u00admes in IT, you have to make the impos\u00adsi\u00adble pos\u00adsi\u00adble \u2014 even if it doesn\u2019t make mathe\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcal sen\u00adse.<\/p>\n

From an inti\u00adma\u00adte break\u00adfast cir\u00adcle to a sum\u00admer par\u00adty in the gar\u00adden<\/h4>\n

Even though the com\u00adpa\u00adny has grown nine\u00adfold (wri\u00adte out the num\u00adber) sin\u00adce Ralf\u2019s ear\u00adly days and the cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adte cul\u00adtu\u00adre has had to adapt accor\u00addin\u00adgly, Ralf likes to talk about the clo\u00adse bond within the team. In the ear\u00adly years, the col\u00adle\u00adgi\u00adal rela\u00adti\u00adonship was clo\u00adse \u2014 almost fami\u00adli\u00adal. Sum\u00admer par\u00adties were held in his gar\u00adden \u2014 initi\u00adal\u00adly star\u00adted by chan\u00adce \u2014 whe\u00adre, as he recalls with a smi\u00adle, some\u00adti\u00admes for\u00adty adults and ten child\u00adren would jump through the gar\u00adden.<\/span><\/p>\n

For him, the clo\u00adse team spi\u00adrit is still one of the reasons why he has remain\u00aded loy\u00adal to the com\u00adpa\u00adny for so many years. \u201cEven though we now have almost 70 employees, you can still feel this team spi\u00adrit. And that\u2019s what makes the dif\u00adfe\u00adrence for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sie\u00admens: the most important rela\u00adti\u00adonship and the grea\u00adtest suc\u00adcess<\/h4>\n

Ralf\u2019s care\u00ader at ORISA is clo\u00adse\u00adly lin\u00adked to the cus\u00adto\u00admer Sie\u00admens Switz\u00ader\u00adland. He star\u00adted working on the pro\u00adject back in 2006, and the first online ver\u00adsi\u00adon of the HIT pro\u00adgram went live in 2008.
A pro\u00admo\u00adtio\u00adnal \u201chow-to\u201d video was even pro\u00addu\u00adced for the off\u00adline ver\u00adsi\u00adon, in which the tool took cen\u00adter stage. \u201cThat was a gre\u00adat moment,\u201d he recalls proud\u00adly. Ralf has now imple\u00admen\u00adted almost 20 pro\u00adjects with Sie\u00admens and main\u00adta\u00adins a clo\u00adse rela\u00adti\u00adonship with this cus\u00adto\u00admer. \u201cThe big\u00adgest com\u00adpli\u00adment is when the cus\u00adto\u00admer keeps coming back to you. It shows that the\u00adre is mutu\u00adal app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon and trust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal chan\u00adge: from flop\u00adpy disks to cloud solu\u00adti\u00adons<\/h4>\n

Tech\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy has also chan\u00adged mas\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly over the last 30 years. \u201cWe used to have one com\u00adpu\u00adter that we all had to share in order to access the inter\u00adnet,\u201d Ralf recalls with a laugh.
Today, of cour\u00adse, soft\u00adware deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment is very dif\u00adfe\u00adrent: \u201cA lot of things have beco\u00adme more con\u00adve\u00adni\u00adent, but some things, such as secu\u00adri\u00adty requi\u00adre\u00adments, also make the work more com\u00adplex.\u201d He com\u00adpa\u00adres the soft\u00adware indus\u00adtry to the fashion world \u2014 trends come and go, but at the core, many things remain the same.<\/p>\n

The secret of his moti\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon: enjoy\u00ading his job<\/h4>\n

And what keeps Ralf moti\u00adva\u00adted after 30 years? \u201cI sim\u00adply enjoy it,\u201d he says sim\u00adply. Working with cus\u00adto\u00admers, the chall\u00adenge of sol\u00adving their pro\u00adblems, and, of cour\u00adse, his team \u2014 that\u2019s what dri\u00adves him. \u201cI get on with some col\u00adle\u00adagues like an old mar\u00adried cou\u00adple. We can com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adte in half sen\u00adten\u00adces and are con\u00adstant\u00adly lear\u00adning from each other.\u201d This mix of fun and cama\u00adra\u00adde\u00adrie keeps him going.<\/p>\n

The varied tasks also mean that working at ORISA is never bor\u00ading. Sup\u00adport\u00ading pro\u00adjects in a wide ran\u00adge of indus\u00adtries and lear\u00adning com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly new things in the pro\u00adcess are still a big plus point of his work for Ralf. \u201cWhat I like about it is that you pick up a bit of know\u00adledge whe\u00adre\u00adver you go. Now I can even read basic hydrau\u00adlic cir\u00adcuit dia\u00adgrams and, thanks to ano\u00adther pro\u00adject in the field of rail vehic\u00adle con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion, I\u2019ve lear\u00adned what a zig\u00adzag width is,\u201d he says with a wink.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Advice for the next gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon<\/h4>\n

Ralf has clear advice for young col\u00adle\u00adagues: \u201cDo what you enjoy.\u201d For him, pro\u00adgramming has always been more than just a job. \u201cFor me, pro\u00adgramming is an art. The only limit is logic \u2014 and as long as some\u00adthing doesn\u2019t con\u00adtra\u00addict logic, you can pro\u00adgram it.\u201d He sees this crea\u00adti\u00adve free\u00addom as the grea\u00adtest strength of his work. In con\u00adclu\u00adsi\u00adon, Ralf explains that the key to his 30-year care\u00ader is simp\u00adle: \u201cHaving fun for 30 years. If you do what you love, you don\u2019t even noti\u00adce how time flies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
